Boarding Pets

Boarding
We have a small veterinarian-supervised boarding facility. It has indoor runs and cages for dogs. They are heated and cooled as needed. You don't have to bring anything. The dogs get outdoors for play time and bathroom breaks several times per day, especially when the weather is nice. We have 3 large, heavily-shaded outdoor runs. We match up dogs of similar size and temperament and let them have play time outside together. The runs are closely monitored so if anyone gets a little pushy or intimidated, we separate them. Dogs that don't want play time with other dogs are still welcome, they get plenty of time outside by themselves. Dogs receiving medications such as insulin injections or tablet medication are welcome too. Additional, services such as grooming, teeth cleanings, spay and neuter surgeries, etc. can be scheduled while boarding.

Boarding charges are based on body weight and the number of nights they stay. We have a strict vaccination and parasite policy.

Required current vaccination for all dogs admitting into boarding are:
  • Rabies
  • Distemper, parvo, parainfluenza, adenovirus (commonly referred to as the distemper parvo vaccine)
  • Bordetella (commonly referred to as kennel cough)
  • Influenza vaccine (commonly referred to as the flu vaccine)

Required vaccinations for all cats are:
  • Rabies
  • Feline rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia

We also have comfortable individualized boarding for cats. They are housed on the other side of our building, completely separate from all dogs. Cats with special medical needs are welcome. We routinely board high maintenance cats such as diabetics that require frequent monitoring and insulin injections. Special diets are not a problem for us to provide. And prearranged additional services can be done too.

All animals are inspected for fleas and if noted, flea medication will be administered at an addition cost. This ensures that everyone comes in healthy and happy and they leave healthy and happy. At the time of check-in and weighing, we will give each pet a quick exam for health status and a scan for external parasites.

Pet Dental Care

Dental disease is one of the most common—but most overlooked—health problems in pets. Because animals often hide discomfort, dental issues can progress quietly until they cause significant pain or infection.

At Brainerd Hills Veterinary Hospital, we provide thorough dental care to help protect your pet’s comfort and long-term health.

How Common Is Dental Disease?
Dental disease is extremely common in both dogs and cats. Most pets show signs of periodontal disease by early adulthood, and the majority of dogs and cats over age three are affected. Because the disease develops below the gumline, it often goes unnoticed without professional care.

What Dental Disease Can Lead To & Why It Matters
Untreated dental disease can cause pain, tooth loss, difficulty eating, and chronic infection. In more advanced cases, bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and affect overall health. Regular dental care helps prevent these issues and supports your pet’s long-term well-being.

Dental Care & Procedures
Our dental care includes a full oral health evaluation under anesthesia, professional dental cleanings, and careful assessment of each tooth. We safely remove plaque and tartar above and below the gumline—areas that cannot be fully addressed while a pet is awake. If we find damaged or diseased teeth, we may recommend extractions to relieve pain and prevent further complications.

Throughout the procedure, your pet is continuously monitored to ensure safety and comfort from start to finish.

Grey Cat Brushing Teeth

Safety and Care
Your pet’s safety is our priority. Every dental procedure includes careful anesthesia monitoring and a thorough oral examination before and during treatment.

Signs Your Pet May Have Dental Disease:

  • Bad breath
  • Difficulty eating or chewing
  • Dropping food
  • Red or bleeding gums
  • Visible tartar build up

Pet Dermatology & Skin Care

Skin issues are one of the most common reasons pets visit the vet—and they can be uncomfortable for both pets and their owners. At Brainerd Hills Veterinary Hospital, we focus on finding the root cause and providing effective, compassionate treatment.

Common Conditions We Treat:
  • Itching, scratching, and excessive licking
  • Allergies (environmental and food-related)
  • Hot spots
  • Hair loss or thinning coat
  • Rashes and skin irritation
  • Ear infections
Allergy Testing Available:
For pets with ongoing skin problems, we offer allergy testing to identify specific triggers. This allows us to create a targeted immunotherapy treatment plan for long-term relief.

Our Approach:
We begin with a thorough exam and may recommend diagnostic testing to better understand your pet’s condition. Common diagnostics include skin scraping, microscopic cytology, skin cultures, and diet trials when food allergies are suspected. Using these tools, we create a personalized treatment plan to relieve symptoms and prevent future flare-ups.

Dog Scratching
Treatment Options:
Depending on your pet’s needs, treatment may include advanced medications such as Cytopoint® and Apoquel®, along with medicated shampoos and other therapies designed to soothe the skin and control itching.

Signs Your Pet May Need Care:
  • Constant scratching or licking
  • Red or irritated skin
  • Hair loss or sores
  • Unpleasant odor from skin or ears
  • Frequent ear shaking

Advanced Diagnostic Services

At Brainerd Hills Veterinary Hospital, accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment. When pets are sick or showing subtle changes in health, advanced diagnostic tools help us quickly identify the cause so we can begin the right care plan.

Laboratory Diagnostics
Laboratory testing allows us to evaluate your pet’s internal health using samples such as blood, urine, and tissue. These tests help detect illness that may not be visible during a physical exam.

Our lab diagnostic services include:
  • Complete bloodwork
  • Chemistry panels
  • Endocrine (hormone) testing
  • Urinalysis
  • Fecal testing
  • Microscopic cytology
  • Skin and ear testing
  • Tonometry
These diagnostics help us assess organ function, evaluate hormone levels, detect infection or inflammation, and identify underlying disease early.

Diagnostic Imaging
Diagnostic imaging allows us to look inside your pet’s body to better understand injuries, illnesses, and internal conditions.

Border Collie Sitting Outside
Our imaging services include:
  • Digital radiography (X-rays)
  • Ultrasound imaging
These tools help us evaluate bones, joints, the chest, and abdominal organs, providing critical information that cannot be obtained through external examination alone.

How Diagnostics Help Your Pet

Many health conditions develop internally before visible symptoms appear. Diagnostic testing allows us to identify problems early, leading to faster answers, more accurate treatment, and better outcomes.

Our Approach
We begin with a thorough physical exam and recommend diagnostics based on your pet’s symptoms. Our goal is to use testing efficiently—gathering the right information without unnecessary procedures.

Advanced Imaging

At Brainerd Hills Veterinary Hospital, advanced diagnostic imaging plays an essential role in accurately evaluating your pet’s health and guiding medical treatment. Our digital radiography and ultrasound services allow our veterinary team to assess internal structures safely, efficiently, and with a high level of diagnostic precision.

By utilizing modern imaging technology, we can identify and monitor a wide range of medical conditions while helping pets receive timely and appropriate care.

Digital Radiography

Digital radiographs (X-rays) provide detailed images of the skeletal system, thoracic cavity, and abdominal organs. This technology allows for rapid image acquisition and enhanced image quality, improving our ability to diagnose both acute and chronic conditions.

Digital radiography is commonly used to evaluate:

  • Fractures and orthopedic injuries
  • Degenerative joint disease and arthritis
  • Cardiac and pulmonary abnormalities
  • Gastrointestinal obstruction or foreign body ingestion
  • Bladder stones and urinary tract abnormalities
  • Abdominal organ changes

The efficiency of digital imaging allows for faster diagnostic interpretation and treatment planning while minimizing stress for your pet.

Ultrasound Imaging

Ultrasound imaging provides real-time evaluation of internal organs and soft tissue structures using non-invasive sound wave technology. This diagnostic modality is especially valuable for assessing organ architecture, fluid accumulation, and soft tissue abnormalities that may not be fully visible on radiographs.

Ultrasound is frequently utilized to evaluate:

  • Liver, spleen, and kidney abnormalities
  • Urinary bladder conditions
  • Gastrointestinal disease
  • Abdominal masses or structural changes
  • Fluid within the chest or abdomen
  • Certain cardiac conditions

Ultrasound examinations are generally well tolerated and often can be performed with minimal restraint.
